It is with deep regret and tremendous sorrow that the officers and members of the Westmont Fire Company announce the passing of Assistant Chief/Fire Commissioner (Retired) William G. Tessing III.

Born October 21, 1946, Bill answered his last call on June 19, 2023, leaving the loving arms of his family to be welcomed into the arms of the Lord. He leaves behind Linda his cherished wife of 55 years, his son William G. Tessing IV (Nicole), daughter Megan Shaw (Danny) and the lights of his life, his grandchildren, William G. Tessing V (Emily Adelsberger), Alex Tessing (Alyssa) and Emory & Barrett Shaw. He also leaves his sister Barbara Popiolek (Fred), Andrea Tessing (Erin) and his sisters & brothers-in-law Susan Mattis (late Tony), Barbara Osherhoski (Jerome), Joan Emory, Rick Emory (Anna) and Kent Emory (Audrey). He also has a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and his good friends Jim & Terry Irwin.

Bill was a US Navy Veteran, Volunteer Fire Fighter and Construction Superintendent. Bill or Grover, or as he was affectionately known to his Westmont Fire Company family, The Old Man, was a staple at the firehouse for 50 years. Joining in 1972, Bill was immediately assigned to the ladder truck. Throughout the years he was promoted to Lieutenant and then Captain until 2007 when he was promoted to Assistant Chief. On the administrative side of the business, Bill was elected President of the Fire Company in 1986 and served in that capacity for four years. Later, he was elected Fire Commissioner and held that position for 37 years until his retirement earlier this year.

The love of the fire service and the sense of community service did not end with Bill. His son Bill 4th and grandsons Bill 5th and Alex are all members of the fire company currently serving as Assistant Chief and Engineers respectively and Alex is a career firefighter in Westmont.

Bill was also a 50-year member of the Carpenters Union. Everyone has a least one "Bill Tessing" story, usually ending in laughter. Please continue to tell these stories and pass them on to show how unique he was.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend his visitation Saturday, June 24th from 11 AM to 1 PM at the JACKSON FUNERAL HOME, 308 Haddon Ave., Haddon Township, NJ, where his funeral service will begin at 1 PM.

Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers contributions in his memory may be made to the Westmont Fire Company No. 1, 120 Haddon Ave., Westmont, NJ 08108. 19140. To share condolences please visit www.jacksonfh.net
