Assistant Chief Michael A. Vitelli Passes

It is with deep regret and profound sadness that the Westmont Fire Company announces the sudden and unexpected passing of Assistant Chief Michael A. Vitelli. Chief Vitelli began his storied volunteer career with the Westmont Fire Company as a firefighter in 1973 after relocating from the Cramer Hill section of Camden. Assigned to the engine company, Mikey, as he was fondly known by his fire company family, rose through the ranks from Lieutenant to Captain and finally to Assistant Chief, a position he held since 2007.

While his experience, passion and dedication to the fire service was above and beyond, it was his portrayal of Santa for the residents of Westmont for which he will be remembered. For two weeks each December over the course of 35 years, Mikey danced his way through snow, rain and cold weather to entertain kids, young and old, of Westmont.

Chief Vitelli is survived by his wife Susan and his three daughters, Tracy Heckers (Jim), Kathleen Hartshaw (Tom), Michelle Schmidt (Kevin) and his grandchildren.

His leadership and presence at the firehouse will be missed and our thoughts and prayers go out to his family at this very difficult time.

Rest easy brother. We’ll take it from here.

I am so sorry to hear about Mike's passing. My prayers go out to Mike's family. His fellow firefighters will be a huge support at this terrible time. Without a doubt. Thank you all for being there for the family. I was so grateful for all you did after Joe's passing. You are a special group

I am very sorry to hear about the loss of Asst. Chief Vitelli. I remember Mike from my Haddon Fire Company days (1974 - 80) and when I was a Medic for the (then) West Jersey Health System. I didn't know him well, but the few times I spoke with him, I knew that he was exceptional and a real down-to-earth person. He will be missed and his family is in my prayers and thoughts.
Sincerely,
Gil Cosnett
